Question 4 of 8
Calculus: Power rule
Find the maximum value of g(x) = −2x⁴ + 8x² + 1
g(x) = −2x⁴ + 8x² + 1
Your working
g'(x) = −8x³ + 16x
−8x(x² − 2) = 0
x = 0, x = ±√2
g(√2) = −2(4) + 8(2) + 1 = 9
Answer
maximum value = 9

Real past papers

Practise the paper, not a copy of it.

Every question is drawn from and modelled on real NSC and IEB past papers — the same phrasing, the same layout, the same diagrams. No gentle rewording, no training wheels. By exam day, nothing on the paper should feel new.

The mistake finder

Find out exactly where the marks go.

Redoing a whole paper and losing the same marks again is the most common way to waste a weekend. PolyLearn tracks every topic and skill you slip on, shows it to you in one dashboard, and quietly steers your next questions straight at it.

The loop

Every mistake comes back
until it doesn't.

Re-reading notes feels productive. Getting it wrong, finding out why, and trying again is what actually moves your mark.

01
Attempt it
Exam-style questions, no solutions shown first. You struggle on purpose — that's where the learning happens.
02
Mistake found
Your answer is marked and the weak spot — the topic and the skill — gets logged, so nothing slips through unnoticed.
03
It comes back
Weak spots feed your next set. You meet them again tomorrow, next week, next month — until they stop costing you marks.
04
Level up
Once you stop slipping, the questions get harder. You're always working at the edge of what you can almost do.
The whole syllabus

Every matric maths topic. One place.

From the foundations of each topic up to the hardest multi-step questions — covered section by section, so nothing is left to chance on the day.

Quick answers

Before you ask.

Is it really free?

Yes. PolyLearn is in beta and free to use while we build it with matric students. It won't stay free forever — the beta is the cheap way in.

Which exams is it for?

Grade 12 Mathematics for both the NSC and IEB. Every question is drawn from and modelled on real past papers and mapped to the topic it tests. Grades 10 and 11 are coming soon.

How does it find my mistakes?

Every answer you give updates your skill level in the topics it covers. The weak spots are fed straight back into the questions you see next, and the difficulty adjusts to match.

Will it just show me the answers?

Not before you've tried. You attempt every question first — exam conditions — and only then do you see how it should have been done.

Find your mistakes before the examiner does.

Your first set takes about fifteen minutes. It's free during the beta — so there's nothing to lose but the mistakes.
